VAMC Northport Anesthesiology Lead Dr. Matt Giuca

Dr. Matthew S. Giuca serves as Chief of Anesthesiology at VA Northport Medical Center and VISN 2 Lead Anesthesiologist; providing strategic clinical oversight of anesthesiology services across aVeterans Affairs facilities in New York and New Jersey. In these dual leadership roles since 2021, he has advanced perioperative care for veteran populations while fostering clinical excellence and innovation across the region's VA healthcare system.
As an Associate Clinical Professor at Stony Brook University- Renaissance School of Medicine, Dr. Giuca integrates rigorous academic scholarship with clinical practice. His research contributions include publications in premier medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Surgery and Anesthesia and Analgesia. With particular focus on perioperative risk stratification, Frailty assessment in surgical populations and Anesthesiology-Medical History used as a comprehensive teaching paradigm. As an investigator in the REGAIN Trial and related Frailty scoring studies, he has contributed to advancing evidence-based approaches to optimizing outcomes in high-risk surgical patients.
Dr. Giuca's commitment to medical education has been recognized through numerous teaching awards throughout his career. He maintains active clinical and academic appointments across multiple institutions, bringing a breadth of perspective to his teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows.
His clinical foundation was established through comprehensive training at premier academic medical centers. Following medical school at Saba University School of Medicine, Dr. Giuca completed a surgical internship at North Shore/Long Island Jewish University Hospital and anesthesiology residency at Harvard Medical School's Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. His training was further enriched by advanced clinical, patient safety and teaching positions at Yale New Haven Health/Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, Winthrop University Hospital, North Shore University Hospital.
Dr. Giuca holds medical licensure in New York and Connecticut, reflecting his commitment to serving diverse patient populations across the Northeast region.
